Athena Mobile Laboratories
When the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak struck West Africa in 2013, the lack of public health infrastructures led to the largest Ebola virus outbreak to date. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States’ Department of Defense (DOD) frantically searched for a solution that would enable localized testing with rapid sample turn-around time. The result: MRIGlobal’s Athena Mobile Laboratories – bringing the lab and staff to Africa.
Case Study: Athena Mobile Laboratories: A Partnership for Scientific ProgressChallenges
In times of public health crises, it is important to have remote access to resources and trained professionals who can rapidly set up and process samples accurately. That’s where Athena Mobile Laboratories come in. These labs are capable of keeping extremely hazardous/biohazardous materials contained, while keeping the researchers safe from contamination in any location.
Solution
The Athena Mobile Lab was designed to function as a highly customizable laboratory. It can be outfitted with a wide selection of state-of-the-art sample preparation, containment and analytical solutions for chemical, biological or mechanical testing. MRIGlobal regularly utilizes Labconco’s Logic+ Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinets in these mobile labs as it keeps both the user and sample safe from contamination. Other Labconco products that can be utilized in Athena labs include: CentriVap Centrifugal Concentrators, FreeZone Freeze Dryers, WaterPro Purification Systems and more.
Benefits
MRIGlobal and Labconco have collaborated on product ideas for many years, including to help with the Ebola and SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks. Considering all the risks associated with public health research, we care deeply about the end solution delivered to scientists and those in the field.
